With the many different Children’s’ programs being administrated by the Fr. Ray Foundation, Sponsorship is the most stable means of insuring that a child will receive a good education, a clean and safe home, and enough good food, medical care, and clothing to sustain them. This allows them to put all their energy into healthy growth for the younger ones and scholastic or vocational programs for the older ones.

Family History and General Information

Ampha (Fon) was brought to our School by her family with having received a recommendation from her uncle. She has been partially blind since birth. She had been living with her parents who are casual workers before attending our boarding school. Ampha’s parents consider that lack of knowledge of what it is like to be blind within the family can only mean that their blind child will not reach her full potential. They decided to place Ampha into our care because they believed that the specialized teaching staff at the School for the Blind would encourage Ampha to do her best. At the school, we teach our students subjects following the national curriculum, in grades from kindergarten up to grade 9. After grade 9 the student will then decide what they want to do in the future. They may want to go on to a vocational school, or leave to get a job. Several students have joined other schools to finish their education up to grade 12 with several students going on to study at university. Upon having been accepted, Ampha was promptly assigned to the Kindergarten Level 2 for evaluation and for possible training which would enable her to be able to attend to her daily personal needs. It will also introduce her to the different pathways to places at the School where she needs to go, such as the dining hall, classrooms, etc. Ampha is now training to be able to look after her personal routine, and she is preparing to start her basic Braille learning. Other than being partially blind, she appears to be strong and healthy. She now weighs 20 kilograms and is 130 centimeters in height. A joyful student, she shows that she is able to adapt herself to the new surrounding environment as well as to her new friends. Continued observation and evaluation, especially in her general behaviour and conduct, will be maintained to ensure a smooth transition. (WS)
